Bamburgh Castle is a short drive along the coast and Holy Island can be reached at low tide across the causeway. Seahouses, roughly 20 minutes away, runs boat trips out to the Farne Islands. Barter Books in Alnwick, one of Britain's largest second-hand bookshops, is also close by.

Families and small groups after a peaceful base for exploring Northumberland's coast will do well here.
