Top of the list is Alnwick Castle, less than a mile away, home to the Duke of Northumberland and famous as a filming location for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. Right next door are Alnwick Gardens, with a grand cascade waterfall, a poison garden and a restaurant in the largest treehouse in Europe. Head east and you'll reach a 20-mile stretch of Heritage coastline (AONB), while west takes you into the heather-capped Cheviot Hills. Both are easily reached for a day out.
